During my recovery, I had the opportunity to sit back and enjoy some of my reading material that has been sitting on my “to do” shelf for months. Field Notes was one of them and I just finished reading it today. Without a doubt, it was one of the most enjoyable reads I have had for a very long time. I laughed, I cried….but mostly I laughed. It was such a fun book and as you wrote on the day you signed the book, we  saw our neighbourhood from your point of view.

I loved your description of how the electronic age has led to the zombification of humans…..how true is that! My tears came when you wrote about the old dog….I was so sad to learn that Stella had crossed over the rainbow bridge. My dog just turned 12 this year and she is getting whiter in the face every day and her movements have slowed down. Your story brought home for me the reality that I have been juggling around in my brain but trying to keep from reaching my heart….but the joy she has given us over these past 12 years was worth every minute spent with her, and while I know the inevitable is probably not far off, I am savouring every minute of every day I have left with her.

I think you have a pretty good idea now that my partner and I truly enjoyed the read and have added it to our special library of books to read again. It was a wonderful collection of your Field Notes columns and the expanded versions of them will give every reader, both from away and from here, a vivid description of rural life on this lovely little piece of God’s green earth that we call home.
